Systems Engineering for Visual Effects

Visual effects studios depend on the collaboration between art and engineering – two cultures with fundamentally different ways of thinking. This paper argues that the failures VFX projects experience most often stem not from bad work but from the unmanaged interactions between these cultures, their tools, and their processes. It proposes that Systems Engineering, developed at NASA to address exactly this kind of complexity, offers VFX studios a practical framework for improving how they design and operate their projects.
